Colon Cancer Prevention

The major factor that increases a person’s risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) Colorectal cancer (also known as colon cancer, rectal cancer or bowel cancer) is age. Risk increases dramatically after age 50 years. But maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating habits can help prevent colon cancer upto a great extent

1. Changing eating habits

Research suggests that making changes to your diet can help reduce your risk of bowel cancer.
∗ Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods –
✓ eat plenty of vegetables, legumes (dried beans, peas or lentils), fruits & cereals (breads, rice, pasta & noodles), preferably wholegrain.
✓ include lean meat, fish and poultry.

✓ include milks, yoghurts and cheeses.  Reduced fat varieties should be chosen where possible.

✓ drink plenty of water.

 ∗ Avoid -
✗ saturated fat

✗ foods high in salt.

✗ high amounts of sugars and foods containing added sugars

2. Avoid red meat

Several studies have linked consumption of Red meats (beef, lamb, or liver) and processed meats (like hot dogs, bologna, and lunch meat)to a higher risk of colorectal cancer.
If you just can't live without red meat, limit yourself to two 4-ounce portions each week, but choose lean cuts, trim the fat, and don't char it on a grill.

3. Limit Alcohol

People who drink more than 4 drinks per day have a 52% higher risk of colon cancer.
If you choose to drink alcohol, limit the amount of alcohol you drink to no more than one drink a day for women and two for men.

Colon Cancer Treatment

Different types of treatment are available for patients with colon cancer.
Surgery is usually the main treatment for bowel cancer, and may be combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or biological treatments, depending on your particular case.

Surgery for colon cancer

Surgery also known as surgical resection is the removal of the tumor and surrounding tissue during an operation. This is the most common treatment for colorectal cancer. Part of the healthy colon or rectum and nearby lymph nodes will also be removed.
The type of surgery depends on the stage and location of the tumor:
ο Polypectomy: A colonoscope, which is a long tube with a camera on the end, is inserted into the rectum and guided to the polyp. A tiny, scissor-like tool or wire loop removes the polyp.

ο Colectomy: The area of the colon where the cancer is, along with some healthy surrounding tissue, is removed. The associated lymph nodes are removed (biopsied) and looked at under a microscope. Usually the surgeon then rejoins the parts of the colon. This surgery also is called a hemicolectomy or partial colectomy.

Radiation therapy or Radiotherapy For Colon Cancer Treatment

Radiation therapy uses high-energy particles or waves, such as x-rays, gamma rays, electron beams, or protons, to destroy or damage cancer cells. Radiation therapy is commonly used for treating colon cancer because this tumor tends to recur near where it initially started.

Chemotherapy For Colon Cancer Treatment

Chemotherapy (chemo) is the use of medicines or drugs to treat cancer. Chemotherapy works by slowing down or stopping the growth of cancer cells.
Systemic chemotherapy is delivered through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells throughout the body. Common ways to give chemotherapy include an intravenous (IV) tube placed into a vein using a needle or in a pill or capsule that is orally swallowed .

Targeted therapy For Colon Cancer Treatment

Targeted Therapy is a treatment that uses drugs or other substances to more precisely identify and attack cancer cells, usually while doing little damage to normal cells. The main goal of targeted therapy is to interfere with specific molecules involved in tumor growth to block the growth and spread of the disease.
