What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. The resultant high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger).

Types of Diabetes:-

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes,  is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. Various factors may contribute to type 1 diabetes, including genetics and exposure to certain viruses. Although type 1 diabetes usually appears during childhood or adolescence, it also can begin in adults.

Type 2 Diabetes 

 Type 2 diabetes is in which the body cells cannot use glucose properly for lack of or resistance to the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. Diabetes can lead to serious complications over time if left untreated. The high blood sugar levels from uncontrolled diabetes can cause serious long-term diabetic complications. Eventually, they damage the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, reducing insulin output.
It is more common and constituents 80-90% of all cases of diabetes. It usually occurs in adults over 40 years of age. 

Type 2 diabetes History

Diabetes has been influencing lives for thousands of years. An ailment suspected to be diabetes was recognized by the Egyptians in manuscripts dating to 1550 BCE. According to The National Medical Journal of India, ancient Indians (circa 600 BCE) were well aware of the condition. They tested for diabetes—which they called “sweet urine disease”—by determining if ants were attracted to a person’s urine.


In Greek, “diabetes” signifies “to pass through.” Greek physicians named the disorder for its top symptom: the excessive passing of urine through the body’s system.

Historical records show that Greek, Indian, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean doctors were aware of the condition, but none could determine its cause.
 

Type 2 Diabetes Facts  

1. In Type 2 diabetes, your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. They make more than enough of it, but their cells are resistant to it and do not know how to use it properly.

2. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. About 90 to 95% of individuals with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

3. Being overweight increases your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

4. Researchers have found many genes that can effect your heritable risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.In fact,If you have a family history, you are at higher risk.

 5.Type 2 used to be called “adult-onset diabetes” because it was diagnosed mainly in older people. Today, though, more children around the world are being diagnosed with type 2, so type 2 is the more common name now.

6. Type 2 diabetes can usually be managed well with a combination of healthier meal plan choices, physical activity, and oral medications. Some people may have to take insulin in order to get better blood glucose control.

  Symptoms of type 2 diabetes

Some of the common Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes are:-
  •  Bladder, Kidney, Skin, or other Infections those that are more frequent or heal slowly.
  • You may experience some fatigue, hunger, and increased of thirst.
  • Other important symptoms like increased Urination, Blurred Vision, Erectile Dysfunction, and Pain or Numbness in the Feet or Hands.

Reasons & Causes of Type 2 diabetes

Some the Common causes of Type 2 Diabetes are :-
a) Obesity: Being obese or overweight puts you at significant risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Four out of five people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

b) Poor Eating Habit: Studies have shown that eating high calorie diet, refined foods and beverages, such as sodas or fruit juices, and too little raw fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can significantly increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. 

c) Physical Inactivity: Physical activities like Exercise, Games & recreation plays a role in protecting the body against insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

d) Sleep Habits: Those who slept fewer than five hours a night or more than nine were at increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

e) Genetics susceptibility:  Genes play an important role in determining a person's risk of type 2 diabetes. The presence of certain genes indicates an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. .In fact,If you have a family history, you are at higher risk.

Precautions To be taken in Type 2 Diabetes

1. Don't smoke- Smoking increases your risk of various diabetes complications, including heart attack, stroke, nerve damage and kidney disease. In fact, smokers who have diabetes are three times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than are nonsmokers who have diabetes. so ask your doctor to help you quit

2. Check your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol at regular Basis - Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Eating healthy foods and exercising regularly can help in Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol.

3. Diet: Keeping good control over blood sugar levels can help reduce the risk of getting complications from type 2 diabetes. Your doctor can refer you to a registered dietician or diabetes counselor to help you formulate a healthy eating plan. Many people with type 2 diabetes will need to monitor intake of carbohydrates and reduce calories.

4. Exercise: Regular exercise, including walking, can help people with type 2 diabetes lower their blood glucose levels. Physical activity also reduces body fat, lowers blood pressure, and helps prevent cardiovascular disease. It’s recommended that people with type 2 diabetes get 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days. 

5. Testing Blood Glucose: Your doctor can suggest how often you should test your blood glucose. Testing can give a good idea of the extent to which your diabetes is under control and can tell you if your management plan needs to be altered.

Type 2 diabetes Prevention

Making a few lifestyle changes can dramatically lower the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. The same changes can also lower the chances of developing heart disease and some cancers.
a) Control Your Weight 
Excess weight is the single most important reason for developing type 2 diabetes type 2 diabetes.
Losing 7 to 10 percent of your current weight can cut your shots of developing Type 2 diabetes in half.

b) Get Moving
Inactivity promotes type 2 diabetes.Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. This puts less stress on your insulin-making cells.

c) Stop watching more TV 
Watching TV for more hours increases the chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Sitting at one place can make you over-weight as well. Additionally, It can also increase the risk of heart disease.

Foods to avoid in Type 2 Diabetes
