  What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced.

How fast do the symptoms of diabetes develop?


Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, also known as Insulin-dependent diabetes,  is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. Various factors may contribute to Type 1 diabetes, including genetics and exposure to certain viruses. Although type 1 diabetes usually appears during childhood or adolescence, it also can begin in adults.

 Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes

♦ Frequent urination
♦ Bed-wetting in children who previously didn't wet the bed during the night
♦ Extreme hunger
♦ Unintended weight loss

♦ In females, a vaginal yeast infection



Causes of Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin due to the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. In type 1 diabetes the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells. Mainly,the immune system protects the body from infection by destroying bacteria, viruses, etc. In type 1 diabetes, beta cell destruction may take place over several years, but symptoms of the disease usually develop over a short period of time.

Some the Common causes of Type 1 Diabetes are:-

a) Family history: Anyone with a parent or sibling with Type 1 diabetes has a slightly increased risk of developing the condition.
b) Genetics susceptibility: The presence of certain genes indicates an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes.

c) Age: Type 1 diabetes typically occurs in children and young adults, though it can appear at any age.

Precautions To be taken in Type 1 Diabetes

1. Don't smoke- Smoking increases your risk of various diabetes complications, including heart attack, stroke, nerve damage and kidney disease. In fact, smokers who have diabetes are three times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than are nonsmokers who have diabetes. So ask your doctor to help you quit.

2. Check your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol at regular Basis - Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Eating healthy foods and exercising regularly can help in Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol.

3. Regular physical activity or exercise-  Exercise helps the body to use insulin more efficiently. It may also lower your risk for heart and blood vessel disease.
